Suffolk Drug Court

The Suffolk Drug Court was established with the purpose of halting the revolving door of drug abuse and arrest by providing the addicted defendant with drug treatment accompanied with strict judicial monitoring.  The Drug Court assists the drug court participant in locating and entering the appropriate drug treatment program as an alternative to incarceration. The drug court accepts non-violent defendants only. Those with violent charges or past convictions for violent crimes will generally not be accepted into the program. The Suffolk County Drug Court brings together the judge, treatment providers, court personal, prosecutors and defense attorneys in a collaborative effort to enforce the participant’s compliance with the court ordered treatment and mandates. The Suffolk Drug Court is held at the Cohalen Court Complex in Central Islip in court room D33.

The Suffolk Drug Court uses a system of graduated rewards and sanctions to encourage defendants to maintain abstinence from drugs and compliance with all court mandates. For the defendant who successfully completes the program, their criminal charges are generally reduced and at times even dismissed. When a participant fails to comply with a court mandate or fails to complete the program, the usual alternative is incarceration.
