Felony Convictions

Felony charge is much more serious than a misdemeanor charge. A conviction to a felony charge may carry a significant amount of incarceration as well as the loss of certain rights. The New York sentencing guidelines on Felony convictions is quite complex. The sentencing guidelines factor in prior felony convictions in determining the minimum and maximum amounts of incarceration a defendant may be sentenced post-conviction. An attorney who practices criminal law in Suffolk County is in the best position to advise a defendant on his or her actual exposure on each felony charge. Anyone charged with a felony should seek counsel from a criminal attorney immediately.

In Suffolk County, most felony cases are sent to the County Court Riverhead or to a County Court Judge sitting at Central Islip Courthouse. Other felony charges may be handled pre-indictment at one of the town courts located on the east end of Suffolk County, such as the East Hampton Town Court, the Southold Town Court, the Southampton Town Court, and the Riverhead Town Court.
