Suffolk County Grand Larceny Cases
 
Grand Larceny is a felony charge that involves stealing from another. The difference between Grand Larceny and Petit larceny has to do with the amount of money involved, the type of items stolen, or the way in which they were stolen. Stealing property from another person with a value over one thousand dollars is one way of committing Grand larceny, however not all Grand Larceny charges are based on the monetary amount involved, for instance, the theft of secret scientific material would fall under Garand Larceny regardless of the monetary value involved. In New York, there are four different categories of Grand Larceny. 
 
Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree is the least serious level of Grand Larceny.  Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree is a class E Felony involving thefts over $1000, or the theft of secret scientific material, or when the property consist of a credit card or debit card, or when the property is taken from the person of another, or obtained by extortion, or the property consist of a motor vehicle with a value in excess of one hundred dollars, or the theft of certain religious items valued of at least one hundred dollars, or the property consist of certain chemicals with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine.
 
Grand Larceny in the Third Degree involves the theft of property with a value that exceeds three thousand dollars. Grand Larceny in the Third Degree is a class D felony.

Grand Larceny in the Second Degree involves the theft of property with a value that exceeds fifty thousand dollars, or where the property is obtained extortion by instilling fear that someone will cause physical injury to someone in the future, cause damage to property, or use or abuse of a position as a public servant by engaging in conduct within or related to his official duties, or by failing or refusing to perform an official duty, in such manner as to affect some person adversely.

Grand Larceny in the Second Degree is a class C felony.
 
Grand Larceny in the First Degree involves the theft of property where the value of the property exceeds one million dollars.

Grand larceny in the first degree is a class B felony.

Most Suffolk County Grand Larceny charges will initially be returnable to the Suffolk County First District Court in Central Islip, NY. Incidents that take place out in the east end of Suffolk County will initially be returnable to one of the town courts located in the east end such as the Riverhead town Court, Southampton Town Court, East Hampton Town Court or Southold Town Court. Upon indictment, All Grand Larceny cases will be transferred to the Suffolk County Court located in Riverhead or at the County Court parts located in Central Islip.
